Religion Makes Difference in Dementia Patients' Lives

Janet Aldrich leads a worship service in an 80-person memory care unit in Evanston, IL. She explains the continued value of religion for Alzheimer's patients, despite the disease. "A lot of it is just about reaching back to the most deep seeded memories because those last almost throughout the lifetime," said Aldrich.

When songs and scriptures begin, she explained, many of those with dementia sit unresponsive. But during the service many residents lift their eyes... and start to sing. People who cannot remember their own children's names remember the words to familiar hymns. They recite the Lord's Prayer and other well-known parts of worship. Aldrich calls this "spiritual memory."
